LESSONS FROM NONPROFITS AND FAMILY BUSINESS
I grew up enjoying the benefits of exceptional nonprofit programs, starting with Girl Scouts at age 6 and Special Olympics at age 13. Thanks to great leaders, I learned camping, backpacking, canoeing, and horseback riding. I became a wrangler at summer camp, working horses and teaching girls to ride. And for my brother, my family began coaching Special Olympics. Coaching a variety of sports year round, I learned about a wide range of disabilities and the challenges and opportunities for persons with disabilities. Those experiences showed me the value of nonprofits and the complexities of programming, staffing, fund raising, and special events.
My father's CPA firm is where I learned accounting, auditing, and family business. In my 20 plus years at Sonnenberg & Co CPAs, through my high school and college years, I was part of a team that produced 100s of audits annually for HOAs and nonprofits. I became an auditor, a CPA and a partner. It set me on a path for a wonderful career where accounting opens the door to work with a wide range of people and organizations. That foundation in my family's business is special to me.
For more insights on my work, a colleague recommended me for an interview and they issued this story. It's slightly embellished, but still fairly on-target.
